April 2018: 'Sandwich Seva' - Fresh food  donation drive

We kicked off the 'sandwich seva' program, a recurring community giving program to feed the needy with freshly prepared meals.

Volunteers gathered together in the morning on Sunday, April 22nd to assemble bags to be distributed to the homeless in LA downtown. Each bag contains 2 sandwiches, a vegetable burger, fruit, and a bottle of water. 50 bags were distributed in total.

In keeping with the temple's mission to do seva in Lord Hanuman's name, we will be doing sandwich seva on the 3rd Sunday of every month. You support makes it possible to continue our efforts. $3 sponsors one bag, which feeds an individual for a day. Please donate generously.

February 2018: Food for Kids -Food Donation Drive

For our January and February project, we teamed up with Chinmaya Bal Vihar of South Bayfor a canned foods drive. The Volunteer Center runs the ‘Food for Kids’ program, that collects non-perishable foods and provides complete weekend meals to children from Title 1 schools and their families. Our goal was to ‘adopt-a-week’ by raising donations for at least 120 bags to be able to feed these children & families for a whole week. Each bag was required to have a specified set of items – breakfast, meals that included healhy protein, rice or pasta, veggies and fruit.

Several boxes of canned foods, breakfast cereal etc had been dropped off by generous devotees at the temple over the last month in our drop box. In addition, we created awareness about our project on Maha Shivarathri and raised over $1000 from visiting devotees and our volunteer committee in just over two days. With these funds our team of volunteers purchased the list of foods specified by Volunteer Center. This, along with the donations from BalVihar families enabled us to assemble over 200 bags – well past our goal! On Sunday, February 18, students of Balvihar assembled these bags of food at the temple. This was a great community exercise that also taught children the value of service especially towards those less fortunate than themselves.

September 2017: Cleaning & Tree Planting Drive

A big Thank You to the BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA TROOP #394, CERRITOS & their families for volunteering their Sunday afternoon to beautify the temple surroundings. The small stretch near the side entrance of the temple building had been overrun with weeds and trash. Temple volunteers along with the team of boy scouts worked together to clear and clean the area and plant a variety of plants.

Thank you for your Seva!

September 2017: Hurricane Relief Fundraiser

As the nation was hit by multiple hurricanes that left several thousands homeless and struggling, the temple wanted to do our part to help out. We organized a fundraiser evening filled with cultural music and dance performances. Together with encouraging the audience to donate generously, we also ran a food fundraiser. Overall, we were able to raise $2600, which exceeded our goal of $2000.

We teamed up with Sewa International USA whose team on the ground at hurricane-hit spots were providing relief by way of food, clothes and blankets etc. Mr. Avanindra Gangapuram, head of Sewa USA's Los Angeles Chapter, accepted the check of $2600 from the temple on behalf of the organization.

We would like to wholeheartedly thank all the performers for sharing their art and for their donations towards the fundraiser. We are also eternally grateful to our team of dedicated volunteers who worked on the scene and behind the scenes to make sure the event proceeded smoothly.
